Your final paper/project for the class is to SELECT A CURRENT PUBLIC POLICY ISSUE with your fellow group members. As a group, you must decide on a policy that impacts Asian Pacific Islander American (APIA) communities through class discussion, course readings or other outside sources.
Remember select the issue carefully so you can really use the concepts
discussed in class to show you are applying them to the policy issue you
have chosen. Look to the bibliographies at the end of each text for research
sources. TIP: check Asian Week, War Times, Amerasia Journal, A Magazine,
Colorlines, and other ethnic or alternative press media sources for resources
and ideas. USE THE LIBRARY!
Examples of public policy topics could include racial profiling
today: the Wen Ho Lee case; immigration policies in the aftermath of Proposition
187 or bilingual education in SF under Proposition 227; how community agencies
are addressing anti-Asian violence today; airport security guards and the
new US citizenship job requirements; the terrorist threat and today's
exclusionary immigration laws and policies; the impact of globalization
on APIA communities; educational rights for immigrant students and communities
in San Jose; gentrification of the past and present (i.e. I-Hotel to SOMA),
Affirmative Action after Proposition 209; etc.
Guidelines:
The group proposals [due Mon 4/29] must be at least 500 words- typed
with a clear and specific issue stated.
In addition, list the roles for each member and for the entire group.
List some of the resources you plan on using.
Final Group Papers [due 5/17 in the beginning of class] must be typed, double spaced and at least eight pages/2000 words (typed-doubled spaced] not including the bibliography page). For proper format for citations and bibliography go to: http://userwww.sfsu.edu/~ericmar/references.html.
Papers must include the following:
·Brief description of the issue;
·Some historical background incl. what institutions are/were
involved and how the Asian Pacific Islander American community has responded
to the issue;
·Analysis of how race, class, and gender of the APIA community
are impacted;
·Root causes for the problem;
·Potential solutions/recommendations (i.e. How would you change
the institution?);
·Short bibliography [list of sources used for the research].
You must include at least 5 sources, not including the Ancheta book. Try
to use the ethnic and alternative press for sources. http://userwww.sfsu.edu/~ericmar/references.html
