1. Omatsu -
According to Omatsu, how
and why did the social movements of the 60's disintegrate? How did the
political landscape for Asian Americans change in the 1980's? Why were
the 80's an 'ambiguous' period for Asian American empowerment? Are
the concepts developed during the Asian American movement of the 60's/70's
- self-determination, liberation, militant struggle - meaningful and relevant
to Asian Americans today? Explain.
2. 9-11 backlash
What information from the
website readings on September 11th, the Hate Backlash, and anti-immigrant
sentiments has impacted your own 'worldview' or how you view the 'war on
terrorism' and immigrant rights in the United States today. How has the
mainstream mass media contributed to this 'backlash' today. It is
OK to also draw from the media literacy discussions here.
3. The I-Hotel and
community displacement
Compare how ‘Urban Renewal’
or ‘redevelopment’ has impacted low income Asian American communities in
SF, Boston and Philly? What similar institutions were involved? How did
Asian American and other low income immigrant communities fight back and
resist the displacement of their communities? What lessons do you
think the history of the I-Hotel, and the Boston and Philly struggles teach
us today?
