AAS 205 - Important! Instructions for Research Paper:

SELECT AN ISSUE:  From class discussions and the course text book select an issue impacting Asian & Pacific Islander communities.  Remember – select the issue carefully so you can really use the concepts discussed in class to show you are applying them to the issue you have chosen. Look to the bibliographies at the end of the text for research sources.

Examples of issues could include – the aftermath of Proposition 187 or Proposition 227, anti-Asian violence today, 1990’s exclusionary immigration laws and policies, garment worker organizing, the impact of globalization on API communities,  or educational rights for immigrant students and communities.  Email or call me if you have questions about potential issues to write about.

Papers are due in class on Wed, May 16 (sec. 1&3) and Thurs, May 17 (sec. 4).  They must be typed, double spaced and at least 1500 words (about 6 pages).  Do your best to cite your sources where possible and to include a short bibliography at the end of your papers. See the course website for the format for citations and bibliography. http://userwww.sfsu.edu/~ericmar/references.html.

Your paper should include the following:

·         Short definition of the issue

·         Some historical background – incl. what institutions are/were involved and how the Asian American community has responded to the issue.

·         Analysis of how race, class, and gender of the API community are impacted

·         Root causes for the problem

·         Potential solutions

·         Short bibliography [list of sources used for the research].

Due in class Wed., May 16 (Thurs, May 17 for AAS 205 sec. 4)
