11/22/02 Important! Instructions for Public Policy Research Paper:

SELECT A CURRENT PUBLIC POLICY ISSUE: From class discussions, materials and the course text book select a current or recent public policy issue impacting Asian & Pacific Islander communities. Remember – select the public policy issue carefully so you can really use the concepts discussed in. Look to the bibliographies at the end of the text and the course website for research sources.

Examples of public policy issues could include – anti-immigrant provisions of the USA Patriot Act, Homeland Security bill, or other recent federal policy changes in Transportation security [involving the airport screeners], ongoing API community displacement struggles, racial violence and anti-Asian violence today, APIFORCE & the campaign against Cambodian American deportations, domestic violence in API communities or educational justice for immigrant students and students of color, or voting rights and API community representation and empowerment. Email or call me if you have questions about potential issues to write about.

Papers are due in my office [Psych 108] on Friday Dec. 20 at 4pm and must be typed, double spaced and at least 1500 words (over 6 pages – but A papers will usually be much longer).Cite your sources and to include a bibliography. See the course website for the format for citations and bibliography. http://userwww.sfsu.edu/~ericmar/references.html.

Proposal DUE Wed 12/4 by 5pm via email to ericmar@att.net - Draft a short proposal [100 words or so] outlining and describing your proposed paper – No late proposals accepted.

Your paper should include the following:

·Tie in concepts from class into your paper – use the paper to show what you’ve learned in the class

·Short description of the public policy issue – include applicable laws or policies

·Some historical background – give the historical context, incl. what institutions [governmental, private sector, community-based] are/were involved and how API or other communities have responded to the issue or similar issues, be specific here with names of organizations, campaigns, etc.

·Analysis of how race, class, and gender of the API community are impacted – for example, if you’re dealing with an anti-immigrant law or policy – explain perhaps how immigrant women are impacted differently than immigrant men, or how so-called ‘unskilled’ immigrants are impacted differently than professional and managerial class immigrants

·Root causes for the problem – what do you or the API community groups that have worked on this issue see at the main deeper causes of the problem?

·Potential solutions – what do you and the groups that have worked on this issue propose as solutions for the problem?

·Bibliography [list of sources used for the research – at least 5 and 2 must be non-internet sources – ie: journals, periodicals and books - library research is crucial for this assignment].

Email or phone me if you have any questions or if I can be of any help in these projects.ericmar@att.net or 415-378-5864 or drop by my office Psych 108. Good luck!
