AAS 205 - Important! Instructions for Public Policy Research Papers announced in class during the week of 11/19/01
[worth 30% of total course grade]
DUE Monday 12/10 in the beginning of class:

SELECT A CURRENT PUBLIC POLICY ISSUE: From class discussions and the course text book select a policy issue impacting Asian & Pacific Islander communities. Remember – select the issue carefully so you can really use the concepts discussed in class to show you are applying them to the policy issue you have chosen. Look to the bibliographies at the end of the text for research sources. TIP: check Asian Week, Amerasia Journal, A Magazine, Colorlines, and other ethnic or alternative press media sources for resources and ideas. USE THE LIBRARY!

Examples of public policy topics could include – racial profiling today: the wen ho lee case; immigration policies in the aftermath of Proposition 187 or bilingual education in SF under Proposition 227; how community agencies are addressing anti-Asian violence today; airport security guards and the new US citizenship job requirements;  the 'terrorist threat' and today's exclusionary immigration laws and policies; the impact of globalization on API communities; educational rights for immigrant students and communities in San Jose; etc.

Email Eric [ericmar@att.net] or Japheth [japhethaquino@earthlink.net]
if you have questions about potential topics.

Papers are due in class on Mon, Dec 12 in the beginning of class.
They must be typed, double spaced and at least 1500 words (most students will write well-over 6 pages). Do your best to cite your sources where possible and to include a short bibliography at the end of your papers. For proper format for citations and bibliography go to:   http://userwww.sfsu.edu/~ericmar/references.html.

Your papers must include the following:

·Short description of the issue

·Some historical background – incl. what institutions are/were involved and how the Asian American community has responded to the issue.

·Analysis of how race, class, and gender of the API community are impacted

·Root causes for the problem

·Potential solutions

·Short bibliography [list of sources used for the research]. You must include at least 5 sources, not including the Ancheta book. Try to use the ethnic and alternative press for sources. http://userwww.sfsu.edu/~ericmar/references.html
