AAS 205 Sections 1, 3 & 4 [Eric Mar]

Written Assignments [minimum 500 words, but most A-papers will be much longer, typed doubled-spaced]

#1 – Subordination & Asian Americans

[Due Wed, 2/21 [for AAS 205 sec. 4 due 2/22]

• Drawing from your experience and your family’s background[1] and experience discuss how subordination and institutionalized racism has impacted you. Make sure you show that you understand the major concepts you are using.

# 2 – Asian Americans & US Institutions - Main Themes; Racialization of Asian Americans

[Due March 14 [for AAS 205 sec. 4 – due March 15]

• Briefly outline the main themes of the course from week one thru March 2. Make sure you mention the themes in the Ancheta book up through Chapter 3 and the instructor’s additional themes as brought up in class discussions.
• Give an example of each of the 3 types of racialization of Asian Americans. Do not use an example that Ancheta uses in the book. Come up with your own examples. For each example you use explain briefly what type of racialization is involved and how it harms [or helps] Asian Americans as a group.

#4 & 5 - 2 Community Events [due April 18 & May 9 [for AAS 205 sec. 4 – due 4/19 and 5/10 ]

Attend a program, rally or event during the spring semester organized by a community-based organization or student group that deals with an issue impacting Asian Americans.

For each event, discuss the “point of view” or political perspective of the organizers of the event. Briefly describe the program or event. Using concepts discussed in AAS 205 explain how the event and the organization involved contributes to “social change” in the Asian American community.

[1] If you are not Asian American or Pacific Islander, just discuss the topic from the point of view of an Asian immigrant to the United States.
