Alexander, Vera, 1995. The influence of the structure and function of
the marine food web
on the dynamics of contaminants in Arctic Ocean ecosystems. The Science
of the Total Environment 100/161: 593-603.
A review article of features of the marine ecosystem that promote bioconcentration
of pollutants in the food web.
Cooper, C.M., 1993. Biological effects of agriculturally derived
surface water pollutants on aquatic systems - a review. Journal of Environmental
Quality 22: 402-408.
A general but useful review of important sources of aquatic pollution.
Davalos-Lind, L., 1996. Phytoplankton and bacterioplankton stress by
sediment-borne pollutants. Journal of Aquatic Ecosystem Health 5:
99-105.
Describes the interaction of nutrients and pollutants in sediments
within one trophic level. Lots of specific info, but a good attempt at
teasing out interactions.
Everts, J.W, B. Aukema, R. Hengeveld & J.H Koeman, 1989. Side-effects
of pesticides on ground-dwelling predatory arthropods in arable ecosystems.
Environmental Pollution 59: 203-225.
Describes the effects of pesticides and herbicides on a guild of spiders
that are candidates for indicator species.
Hellawell, J. M. Biological Indicators of Freshwater Pollution
and Environmental Mangement. Elsevier Applied Science Publishers, London,
1986.
Comprehensive/ detailed book covering freshwater ecosystems, biological
indicators, environmental stress, toxic effects, filed assessments, and
management strategies. Very interesting.
Kloppel, H. & W. Kordel, 1997. Pesticide volatilization and
exposure of terrestrial ecosystems. Chemosphere vol. 35 no. 6, 1271-1289.
Describes how pesticides and herbicides can be carried downwind and
affect non-target plants and animals. A rather technical study; hard to
find a strong conclusion.
Lemly, A.D., 1997. Ecosystem recovery following selenium contamination
in a freshwater reservoir. Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety
36: 275-281.
Results of monitoring selenium levels in a lake before and after discharge
stopped. Thorough data sets and solid conclusions.
Ma,
W., W. Denneman, & J. Faber, 1991. Hazardous exposure of ground-living
small mammals to cadmium and lead in contaminated terrestrial ecosystems.
Arch. Environ. Contam. Toxicol. 20: 266-270.
An example of pollutant effects in terrestrial systems. Results of
an actual study on contaminants in two trophic levels.
Maund, S.J, T.N.Sherratt, T.Strickland, J. Biggs, P. Williams, N.
Shillabeer, & P.C. Jepson, 1997. Ecological considerations in pesticide
risk assessment for aquatic ecosystems. Pesticide Science 49: 185-190.
A critique of many lab and mesocosm studies for determining pesticide
risk in ecosystems. Funded by a chemical company.
Muirhead-Thompson, R.C. Pesticide Impact on Stream Fauna, with
special reference to macroinvertebrates. Cambridge University Press,
cambridge, 1987.
Detailed review of lab and field studies involving pesticide impacts
on aquatic ecosystems. Describes sampling tecniques, testing methods, and
comprehensive data tables.
Nemerow, N.L. Stream, Lake,Estuary, and Ocean Pollution, 2nd edition.Van
Nostrand Reinhold, New York, 1991.
This book is part of an environmental engineering series. Highly technical
with very little background info.
Prat, N. & J.V. Ward. The tamed river. In: Limnology Now:
A Paradigm of Planetary Problems, R. Margalef, ed. 1994 Elsevier Science
B.V.
A chapter-like summary of various human disturbances on aquatic communities.
Describes biological as well as management issues. Good figures and tables.
Ravera, 0,. Some selected examples of eutrophicated European lakes.
In: Pollutants and their Ecotoxicological Significance, H.W. Nurnberg,
ed.. John Wiley and Sons, 1985.
Good overview of the process of eutrophication. A better article for
gaining some background
than getting details/ data.
Wrona, F.J & K.J. Cash, 1996. The ecosystem approach to environmental
assessment: moving from theory to practice. Journal of Aquatic Ecosystem
Health 5: 89-97.
Reviews literature on the concept of ecosystem health. Gives a case
study of an ecosystem management approach that incorporates environmental,
societal, industrial, and regulatory concerns.
