Online exercises and field trips
 

Course Format: Animal Diversity lab is a course for non-majors designed to reinforce and supplement principles taught in Biol 170 Animal Diversity. We will provide students with exposure to a wide range of animal groups using images and by viewing live animals during field trips. 

 

Field Trips: There are 4 scheduled field trips from which students are required to attend two. The field trip dates and locations are as follows:

 

24 February (Tuesday afternoon 2:15 meet on site) – Ano Nuevo State Preserve to view Elephant seals in mating season. Probably need to leave San Francisco by 1pm to get there on time. Be prepared to take a 2 hour walk across the dunes, so dress appropriately. No food allowed on the walk. Parking fee for each car ($3-5), and ticket for the guided walk is $4. 13 March (Saturday 11:00am meet on site) – Monterey Bay Aquariumto view a wide variety of marine invertebrate and vertebrate taxa. It is a 2 hours drive, so leave by 9am. Meet near the entrance to the Aquarium. Check the web site for directions. (admission is $15.95 with student ID, there are fees for parking) (Field Trip Exercise)

 

10 April (Saturday 11:00am meet on site) – Fitzgerald Marine Preserveto view a wide variety of marine invertebrate and some vertebrate taxa (Field Trip Exercise)

 

8 May (Saturday 11:00am meet on site) – San Francisco Zooto view a wide variety of vertebrate taxa, and some terrestrial invertebrate groups (Field Trip Exercise)

 

Online Exercises: There will be 10 online exercises that require students to respond to a series of questions after viewing, reading, and/or interacting with materials linked to the class website.  Online exercises will focus on specific animal groups, their anatomy, behavior, physiology, and ecology. Five exercises will focus on invertebrates and five on vertebrates. Online exercises will be posted weekly beginning no later than the week of 2 March. Students will turn in their lab write-up (responses to questions) no more than 1 week after the exercise is posted.  

 

Course Evaluation: Field trip attendance and participation will comprise 20% and the online lab exercises 80% of the class grade.
