PHYLLANTHUS ACIDUS
Otaheite Gooseberry, Grosella, Cheremai
Dioecious. A native of Madagascar and India; the manner of fruiting is
remarkable. The fruit hang in clusters, along the limbs, branches and trunk. It
sometimes produces two crops a year. The fruit is waxy and light yellow, fleshy
and ribbed, turban-like. The flavor is tart and like that of a gooseberry. It is
best cooked with sugar and served as a compote or a pie filling. In India, it is
used in pickles and preserves. Propagated by seed, cutting and air layer.
