The John F. True Computer Lab is operated by San Francisco State University's Division of Information Technology The facility was opened to the public on September 3rd, 1996.  Use of the facility is reserved for currently registered students, staff and faculty of San Francisco State University.  The facility is not open to the general public.

The construction of the computer lab was the result of efforts on the part of Dr. John F. True, Executive Director of Computing Services, 1983-1998.  His goal was to provide a state-of-the-art facility for the students of San Francisco State University, which was open twenty-four hours per day.  Through his hard work and dedication, space in the center of the San Francisco State University campus was found in the J. Paul Leonard Library and initial funding for construction and equipment was provided by the Office of the President, Dr. Robert A. Corrigan.

In recognition of his efforts on behalf of the students of San Francisco State University, the lab was renamed in his honor on April 16th, 1999.
