Writing Skills
Sometimes, academia requires us to use language that is anything but plain. In my opinion, the mark of an excellent communicator is his or her ability to distill the essence of a reading or idea, and make it accessible to a broader audience.
The M.P.A. program provides ample opportunity to hone one's skill at writing, whether it be a lengthy description of a budget analysis, or a succinct memorandum to a fellow administrator. In this regard, knowing one's target audience is indispensible in writing a compelling piece.
My body of work contains several different formats, including an assessment of the impact of Prop 209 on the diversity of University of California admissions. Similarly, the case of Kristin Larder, who was stalked and murdered by her troubled ex-boyfriend, serves as a vivid reminder that our actions (or inaction) as public servants have repercussions. While it isn't Shakespeare, public administration can certainly have moments of comedy and drama. Sometimes, truth is stranger than fiction.
