As a professor and researcher of second language aquisition, Dr. Lao has been awarded the following grants:

Bay Area National Professional Development Program

NPD provides scholarships and teacher training for bilingual instructional personnel serving English language learners.

Chinese Literacy Instructional Materials and Curriculum Development (ChiLi)

With funding from project ChiLi, Dr. Lao develops Chinese literacy instructional materials and curriculum for elementary school students to strengthen Chinese language instruction in the US.

STARTALK Student Program (SF-CLASS)

Dr. Lao, along with her team of secondary school teachers and SFSU colleagues, design, develop, and implement a literacy based, instructional technology infused, high interest, aural and print rich Chinese program for middle school students to develop their Chinese proficiency by incorporating recreational reading and listening into the curriculum.

Applications can be turned in via many ways:
1. Post Office - Mail the packet to SFSU, 1600 Holloway Ave., BH 228, San Francisco, California 94132. Postmark will not be accepted.
2. Anytime Drop-off – mail box in front of the office at SFSU, Burk Hall 228

3. In person drop-off – STARTALK Program office will be opened from
9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m on Friday, May 29 and Thursday, June 4 to receive applications.
