We Took This Class: An Introduction We came to this class for two reasons: first, because many of our students actively use computers and the World Wide Web every day. The world is now linked, interconnected in a new space-time continuum that offers teachers and students very exciting possibilities --- possibilities that we want to know about so we can decide how computers can work in our curriculum. We are committed to the idea that we have established values and goals in our teaching, into which we will integrate technology as an enrichment tool. We do not believe that technology should replace a living and breathing instructor, but rather that is should give our curriculum more "real world" relevancy and applicability for our students. In essence, we agree that educators everywhere recognize that computers are already a huge part of so many of our students' lives, and will continue to be both in school and out. As a result, the landscape of teaching literacy is changing as well. Teachers today are expected to be conversant with technology and how it can be integrated into the classroom. This expectation is the base of our second reason for taking English 708: we want to be hired, to become tenured, to advance in our fields, and to be excellent at what we do. Thus we recognize that we need to learn what these computers can and cannot do for our students, so we can use them in the most informed and educated way possible in our classrooms. |
