Xiushui (Mike) Ren, MD, Cardiologist, The Permanente Medical Group 

Dr. Ren is a cardiologist at The Permanente Medical Group in Redwood City, California.  He completed his Cardiovascular Diseases Fellowship at California Pacific Medical Center.  He will speak to pre-health students about his journey through medical school and give insight to his life as a cardiologist.

Paul W. Day IV, Events and Communications Manager, UCSF Office of Diversity and Outreach

Mr. Day is the Events and Communications Manager for UCSF Office of Diversity and Outreach. He will be speaking to us about the Inside UCSF program with the application period currently open until Friday, February 24.

Emily Wineland, former post-bac student and dental student at UCSF, and fellow first year health professional students in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Nursing at UCSF will provide a panel discussion about life as health professional student and a Q&A session.

Andrew Arellano, Recruiter and Advisor, Rosenberg School of Optometry

Mr. Arellano is a professional recruiter and advisor for the Rosenberg School of Optometry. He will be speaking to us about the Rosenberg School of Optometry at the University of Incarnate Word and the application process.

Hobart Harris, MD, UCSF Chief of General Surgery

Dr. Harris has his expertise in treating surgical infections and diseases of the pancreas and biliary system. Dr. Harris is also a Principal Investigator in the UCSF Surgical Research Laboratory at San Francisco General Hospital and performs research on surgical infections, innate immunity, and inflammatory diseases of the pancreas. Dr. Harris earned his undergraduate, medical, and public health degrees at Harvard University and his internship and residency in surgery at UCSF. Dr. Harris will speak about topics and issues in general surgery.

Tom Hueller, Associate Director of Admissions for Ross University

Ross University School of Medicine is located in Dominica, in the Caribbean.  Ross has a 93.3% United States Medical Licensing Exam pass rate.  Over 900 Ross graduates are practicing physicians in California.

Grace P. Landel, MEd, PA-C, Touro University

Ms. Landel is the Program Director of the Touro University–California Joint Masters of Science in Physician Assistant Studies and Masters in Public Health Program.  She will speak to pre-health students interested in applying to Touro University.

Vineet Singal, Patient Education Opportunities

Vineet Singal is a student at Stanford University and co-founder of Anjna Patient Education, a nonprofit that aims to use technology in free clinics. Huffington Post named him in the “Top 10 Changemakers Under 40” and Vineet also leads the 100KCheeks, a campaign to register new bone marrow donors. Vineet will be speaking on Patient Education Opportunities.

Conan MacDougall, PharmD, Associate Professor of Clinical Pharmacy, UCSF

Dr. MacDougall is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pharmacy in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy at the University of California, San Francisco. He provides clinical service to the Infectious Diseases Consult Service at UCSF Medical Center and participates in UCSF's antimicrobial management program. His research interests include the pharmacoepidemiology of antimicrobial use in hospitals and communities, associations between antimicrobial use and resistance, and the clinical use of antifungal agents. Dr. MacDougall co-coordinates the clinical pharmacy therapeutics course in infectious diseases and oncology, precepts students on the infectious diseases rotation, and lectures on antimicrobial agent pharmacology.  He will be speaking about his experiences with pharmacy as a career.

Juhn Verano, Admissions Officer, Stanford University School of Medicine

Mr. Verano is an admissions counselor at Stanford SOM.  He received his BS from UC Davis and his MS from SFSU.  He will speak to pre-health students interested in applying to the Stanford University School of Medicine.

Marc Anderson, Professor of Organic Chemistry, SFSU

Dr. Anderson is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at San Francisco State University. He has made numerous research publications concerning medicinal chemistry and computer-aided drug discovery, in particular concerning the development of anti-malarial compounds and breast cancer treatment. This semester he will be presenting us with his new research, titled "Synthesis and Evaluation of Urearetics: A Novel Class of Urea-transport Targeting Diuretic Agents".

Gloria Nusse, Anatomy Instructor and Forensic Artist Specialist

Gloria Nusse teaches anatomy at SFSU and is a forensic artist, who has much experience working for known scientific and historical institutions. Through her forensic artwork, she has helped indentify several individuals and some of these individual’s stories have been featured on CBS “48 Hours.” Gloria Nusse is currently researching trauma to bones and reconstruction. She will be speaking on a variety of topics and issues in her field.

Summer or Fall, 2012

Fred Tovar, Assistant Director of Admissions for Stanford’s PA Program, HCOP, and MCAT Academy

Mr. Tovar is Assistant Director of Admissions for the Stanford SOM Primary Care Associate Program. He will speak to us about applying to Stanford SOM and the PA program, as well as about diversity issues in medical education. In addition, he will be presenting about the Stanford MCAT Academy program, an MCAT preparation program for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
