Welcome to the Biological Oceanography Laboratory, headed by Dr. Stephen M. Bollens, Professor of Biology and Environmental Studies, and Associate Dean of Research and Development, College of Science and Engineering. We are an active and diverse research group consisting of post-doctoral investigators, research technicians and graduate students. Our main lab is housed at the Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies(RTC), San Francisco State University's marine field station on San Francisco Bay.

Our research is broadly concerned with the ecology of marine and estuarine zooplankton and fish, and spans the sub-disciplines of behavior, population biology, community ecology and ecosystem dynamics. Our research often has an applied aspect to it, touching upon such areas as conservation biology, restoration ecology, fisheries oceanography, and global change. We employ a wide variety of approaches to "doing science", including field (observational), modeling and experimental techniques. While much of our current research is focused on San Francisco Bay and the coastal ocean off California, locations of other current or recent projects include estuaries of the northeast Pacific (CA, OR, WA, and BC), Georges Bank/Northwest Atlantic, the Arabian Sea, the Florida Keys, and the Bering Sea. These projects are funded by a wide range of federal and state agencies, including the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Office of Naval Research (ONR), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the United States Geological Survey (USGS), and the CALFED Bay/Delta Program.
