OLD TESTEMENT
Genesis 4:2-5 (King James Version)
4:2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel
was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
4:3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought
of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.
4:4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his
flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to
his offering:
4:5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect.
And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
Genesis 22:10-14 (Good News Bible)
22:10 Then he picked up the knife to kill him.
22:11 But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven,
"Abraham, Abraham!" He answered, "Yes, here I am."
22:12 "Don't hurt the boy or do anything to him," he said.
"Now I know that you honor and obey God, because you have not kept
back your only son from him."
22:13 Abraham looked around and saw a ram caught in a bush
by its horns. He went and got it and offered it as a burnt offering
instead of his son.
22:14 Abraham named that place "The Lord Provides."
And even today people say, "On the Lord's mountain he provides."
Exodus 12:3-10 (King James
Version)
12:3 Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying,
In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man
a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:
12:4 And if the household be too little for the lamb, let
him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the
number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make
your count for the lamb.
12:5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the
first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:
12:6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of
the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel
shall kill it in the evening.
12:7 And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on
the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein
they shall eat it.
12:8 And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast
with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall
eat it.
12:9 Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but
roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance
thereof.
12:10 And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning;
and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with
fire.
Exodus 29 (King James Version)
29:1 And this is the thing that thou shalt do unto them
to hallow them, to minister unto me in the priest's office: Take
one young bullock, and two rams without blemish,
29:2 And unleavened bread, and cakes unleavened tempered
with oil, and wafers unleavened anointed with oil: of wheaten flour
shalt thou make them.
29:3 And thou shalt put them into one basket, and bring
them in the basket, with the bullock and the two rams.
29:4 And Aaron and his sons thou shalt bring unto the door
of the tabernacle of the congregation, and shalt wash them with water.
29:5 And thou shalt take the garments, and put upon Aaron
the coat, and the robe of the ephod, and the ephod, and the breastplate,
and gird him with the curious girdle of the ephod:
29:6 And thou shalt put the mitre upon his head, and put
the holy crown upon the mitre.
29:7 Then shalt thou take the anointing oil, and pour it
upon his head, and anoint him.
29:8 And thou shalt bring his sons, and put coats upon
them.
29:9 And thou shalt gird them with girdles, Aaron and his
sons, and put the bonnets on them: and the priest's office shall
be theirs for a perpetual statute: and thou shalt consecrate Aaron
and his sons.
29:10 And thou shalt cause a bullock to be brought before
the tabernacle of the congregation: and Aaron and his sons shall
put their hands upon the head of the bullock.
29:11 And thou shalt kill the bullock before the LORD,
by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
29:12 And thou shalt take of the blood of the bullock,
and put it upon the horns of the altar with thy finger, and pour
all the blood beside the bottom of the altar.
29:13 And thou shalt take all the fat that covereth the
inwards, and the caul that is above the liver, and the two kidneys,
and the fat that is upon them, and burn them upon the altar.
29:14 But the flesh of the bullock, and his skin, and his
dung, shalt thou burn with fire without the camp: it is a sin offering.
29:15 Thou shalt also take one ram; and Aaron and his sons
shall put their hands upon the head of the ram.
29:16 And thou shalt slay the ram, and thou shalt take
his blood, and sprinkle it round about upon the altar.
29:17 And thou shalt cut the ram in pieces, and wash the
inwards of him, and his legs, and put them unto his pieces, and unto
his head.
29:18 And thou shalt burn the whole ram upon the altar:
it is a burnt offering unto the LORD: it is a sweet savour, an offering
made by fire unto the LORD.
29:19 And thou shalt take the other ram; and Aaron and
his sons shall put their hands upon the head of the ram.
29:20 Then shalt thou kill the ram, and take of his blood,
and put it upon the tip of the right ear of Aaron, and upon the tip
of the right ear of his sons, and upon the thumb of their right hand,
and upon the great toe of their right foot, and sprinkle the blood
upon the altar round about.
29:21 And thou shalt take of the blood that is upon the
altar, and of the anointing oil, and sprinkle it upon Aaron, and
upon his garments, and upon his sons, and upon the garments of his
sons with him: and he shall be hallowed, and his garments, and his
sons, and his sons' garments with him.
29:22 Also thou shalt take of the ram the fat and the rump,
and the fat that covereth the inwards, and the caul above the liver,
and the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, and the right
shoulder; for it is a ram of consecration:
29:23 And one loaf of bread, and one cake of oiled bread,
and one wafer out of the basket of the unleavened bread that is before
the LORD:
29:24 And thou shalt put all in the hands of Aaron, and
in the hands of his sons; and shalt wave F91 them for a wave offering
before the LORD.
29:25 And thou shalt receive them of their hands, and burn
them upon the altar for a burnt offering, for a sweet savour before
the LORD: it is an offering made by fire unto the LORD.
29:26 And thou shalt take the breast of the ram of Aaron's
consecration, and wave it for a wave offering before the LORD: and
it shall be thy part.
29:27 And thou shalt sanctify the breast of the wave offering,
and the shoulder of the heave offering, which is waved, and which
is heaved up, of the ram of the consecration, even of that which
is for Aaron, and of that which is for his sons:
29:28 And it shall be Aaron's and his sons' by a statute
for ever from the children of Israel: for it is an heave offering:
and it shall be an heave offering from the children of Israel of
the sacrifice of their peace offerings, even their heave offering
unto the LORD.
29:29 And the holy garments of Aaron shall be his sons'
after him, to be anointed therein, and to be consecrated in them.
29:30 And that son that is priest in his stead shall put
them on seven days, when he cometh into the tabernacle of the congregation
to minister in the holy place.
29:31 And thou shalt take the ram of the consecration,
and seethe his flesh in the holy place.
29:32 And Aaron and his sons shall eat the flesh of the
ram, and the bread that is in the basket, by the door of the tabernacle
of the congregation.
29:33 And they shall eat those things wherewith the atonement
was made, to consecrate and to sanctify them: but a stranger shall
not eat thereof, because they are holy.
29:34 And if ought of the flesh of the consecrations, or
of the bread, remain unto the morning, then thou shalt burn the remainder
with fire: it shall not be eaten, because it is holy.
29:35 And thus shalt thou do unto Aaron, and to his sons,
according to all things which I have commanded thee: seven days shalt
thou consecrate them.
29:36 And thou shalt offer every day a bullock for a sin
offering for atonement: and thou shalt cleanse the altar, when thou
hast made an atonement for it, and thou shalt anoint it, to sanctify
it.
29:37 Seven days thou shalt make an atonement for the altar,
and sanctify it; and it shall be an altar most holy: whatsoever toucheth
the altar shall be holy.
29:38 Now this is that which thou shalt offer upon the
altar; two lambs of the first year day by day continually.
29:39 The one lamb thou shalt offer in the morning; and
the other lamb thou shalt offer at even:
29:40 And with the one lamb a tenth deal of flour mingled
with the fourth part of an hin of beaten oil; and the fourth part
of an hin of wine for a drink offering.
29:41 And the other lamb thou shalt offer at even, and
shalt do thereto according to the meat offering of the morning, and
according to the drink offering thereof, for a sweet savour, an offering
made by fire unto the LORD.
29:42 This shall be a continual burnt offering throughout
your generations at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation
before the LORD: where I will meet you, to speak there unto thee.
29:43 And there I will meet with the children of Israel,
and the tabernacle shall be sanctified by my glory.
29:44 And I will sanctify the tabernacle of the congregation,
and the altar: I will sanctify also both Aaron and his sons, to minister
to me in the priest's office.
29:45 And I will dwell among the children of Israel, and
will be their God.
29:46 And they shall know that I am the LORD their God,
that brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, that I may dwell
among them: I am the LORD their God.
Leviticus 1 (King James Version)
1:1 And the LORD called unto Moses, and spake unto him out
of the tabernacle of the congregation, saying,
1:2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them,
If any man of you bring an offering unto the LORD, ye shall bring
your offering of the cattle, even of the herd, and of the flock.
1:3 If his offering be a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let
him offer a male without blemish: he shall offer it of his own voluntary
will at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the
LORD.
1:4 And he shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt
offering; and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for
him.
1:5 And he shall kill the bullock before the LORD: and
the priests, Aaron's sons, shall bring the blood, and sprinkle the
blood round about upon the altar that is by the door of the tabernacle
of the congregation.
1:6 And he shall flay the burnt offering, and cut it into
his pieces.
1:7 And the sons of Aaron the priest shall put fire upon
the altar, and lay the wood in order upon the fire:
1:8 And the priests, Aaron's sons, shall lay the parts,
the head, and the fat, in order upon the wood that is on the fire
which is upon the altar:
1:9 But his inwards and his legs shall he wash in water:
and the priest shall burn all on the altar, to be a burnt sacrifice,
an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.
1:10 And if his offering be of the flocks, namely, of the
sheep, or of the goats, for a burnt sacrifice; he shall bring it
a male without blemish.
1:11 And he shall kill it on the side of the altar northward
before the LORD: and the priests, Aaron's sons, shall sprinkle his
blood round about upon the altar.
1:12 And he shall cut it into his pieces, with his head
and his fat: and the priest shall lay them in order on the wood that
is on the fire which is upon the altar:
1:13 But he shall wash the inwards and the legs with water:
and the priest shall bring it all, and burn it upon the altar: it
is a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour
unto the LORD.
1:14 And if the burnt sacrifice for his offering to the
LORD be of fowls, then he shall bring his offering of turtledoves,
or of young pigeons.
1:15 And the priest shall bring it unto the altar, and
wring off his head, and burn it on the altar; and the blood thereof
shall be wrung out at the side of the altar:
1:16 And he shall pluck away his crop with his feathers,
F1 and cast it beside the altar on the east part, by the place of
the ashes:
1:17 And he shall cleave it with the wings thereof, but
shall not divide it asunder: and the priest shall burn it upon the
altar, upon the wood that is upon the fire: it is a burnt sacrifice,
an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.
Leviticus 2 (King James Version)
2:1 And when any will offer a meat offering unto the LORD,
his offering shall be of fine flour; and he shall pour oil upon it,
and put frankincense thereon:
2:2 And he shall bring it to Aaron's sons the priests:
and he shall take thereout his handful of the flour thereof, and
of the oil thereof, with all the frankincense thereof; and the priest
shall burn the memorial of it upon the altar, to be an offering made by
fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD:
2:3 And the remnant of the meat offering shall be Aaron's
and his sons': it is a thing most holy of the offerings of the LORD
made by fire.
2:4 And if thou bring an oblation of a meat offering baken
in the oven, it shall be unleavened cakes of fine flour mingled with
oil, or unleavened wafers anointed with oil.
2:5 And if thy oblation be a meat offering baken in a pan,
it shall be of fine flour unleavened, mingled with oil.
2:6 Thou shalt part it in pieces, and pour oil thereon:
it is a meat offering.
2:7 And if thy oblation be a meat offering baken in the
fryingpan, it shall be made of fine flour with oil.
2:8 And thou shalt bring the meat offering that is made
of these things unto the LORD: and when it is presented unto the
priest, he shall bring it unto the altar.
2:9 And the priest shall take from the meat offering a
memorial thereof, and shall burn it upon the altar: it is an offering
made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.
2:10 And that which is left of the meat offering shall
be Aaron's and his sons': it is a thing most holy of the offerings
of the LORD made by fire.
2:11 No meat offering, which ye shall bring unto the LORD,
shall be made with leaven: for ye shall burn no leaven, nor any honey,
in any offering of the LORD made by fire.
2:12 As for the oblation of the firstfruits, ye shall offer
them unto the LORD: but they shall not be burnt on the altar for
a sweet savour.
2:13 And every oblation of thy meat offering shalt thou
season with salt; neither shalt thou suffer the salt of the covenant
of thy God to be lacking from thy meat offering: with all thine offerings
thou shalt offer salt.
2:14 And if thou offer a meat offering of thy firstfruits
unto the LORD, thou shalt offer for the meat offering of thy firstfruits
green ears of corn dried by the fire, even corn beaten out of full
ears.
2:15 And thou shalt put oil upon it, and lay frankincense
thereon: it is a meat offering.
2:16 And the priest shall burn the memorial of it, part
of the beaten corn thereof, and part of the oil thereof, with all
the frankincense thereof: it is an offering made by fire unto the
LORD.
Leviticus 3 (King James Version)
3:1 And if his oblation be a sacrifice of peace offering,
if he offer it of the herd; whether it be a male or female, he shall
offer it without blemish before the LORD.
3:2 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of his offering,
and kill it at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and
Aaron's sons the priests shall sprinkle the blood upon the altar
round about.
3:3 And he shall offer of the sacrifice of the peace offering
an offering made by fire unto the LORD; the fat that covereth the
inwards, and all the fat that is upon the inwards,
3:4 And the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, which
is by the flanks, and the caul F5 above the liver, with the kidneys,
it shall he take away.
3:5 And Aaron's sons shall burn it on the altar upon the
burnt sacrifice, which is upon the wood that is on the fire: it is
an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.
3:6 And if his offering for a sacrifice of peace offering
unto the LORD be of the flock; male or female, he shall offer it
without blemish.
3:7 If he offer a lamb for his offering, then shall he
offer it before the LORD.
3:8 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of his offering,
and kill it before the tabernacle of the congregation: and Aaron's
sons shall sprinkle the blood thereof round about upon the altar.
3:9 And he shall offer of the sacrifice of the peace offering
an offering made by fire unto the LORD; the fat thereof, and the
whole rump, it shall he take off hard by the backbone; and the fat
that covereth the inwards, and all the fat that is upon the inwards,
3:10 And the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them,
which is by the flanks, and the caul above the liver, with the kidneys,
it shall he take away.
3:11 And the priest shall burn it upon the altar: it is
the food of the offering made by fire unto the LORD.
3:12 And if his offering be a goat, then he shall offer
it before the LORD.
3:13 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of it, and
kill it before the tabernacle of the congregation: and the sons of
Aaron shall sprinkle the blood thereof upon the altar round about.
3:14 And he shall offer thereof his offering, even an offering
made by fire unto the LORD; the fat that covereth the inwards, and
all the fat that is upon the inwards,
3:15 And the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them,
which is by the flanks, and the caul above the liver, with the kidneys,
it shall he take away.
3:16 And the priest shall burn them upon the altar: it
is the food of the offering made by fire for a sweet savour: all
the fat is the LORD'S.
3:17 It shall be a perpetual statute for your generations
throughout all your dwellings, that ye eat neither fat nor blood.
Leviticus 4 (King James Version)
4:1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
4:2 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a soul
shall sin through ignorance against any of the commandments of the
LORD concerning things which ought not to be done, and shall do against
any of them:
4:3 If the priest that is anointed do sin according to
the sin of the people; then let him bring for his sin, which he hath
sinned, a young bullock without blemish unto the LORD for a sin offering.
4:4 And he shall bring the bullock unto the door of the
tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD; and shall lay his
hand upon the bullock's head, and kill the bullock before the LORD.
4:5 And the priest that is anointed shall take of the bullock's
blood, and bring it to the tabernacle of the congregation:
4:6 And the priest shall dip his finger in the blood, and
sprinkle of the blood seven times before the LORD, before the vail
of the sanctuary.
4:7 And the priest shall put some of the blood upon the
horns of the altar of sweet incense before the LORD, which is in
the tabernacle of the congregation; and shall pour all the blood
of the bullock at the bottom of the altar of the burnt offering,
which is at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
4:8 And he shall take off from it all the fat of the bullock
for the sin offering; the fat that covereth the inwards, and all
the fat that is upon the inwards,
4:9 And the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them,
which is by the flanks, and the caul above the liver, with the kidneys,
it shall he take away,
4:10 As it was taken off from the bullock of the sacrifice
of peace offerings: and the priest shall burn them upon the altar
of the burnt offering.
4:11 And the skin of the bullock, and all his flesh, with
his head, and with his legs, and his inwards, and his dung,
4:12 Even the whole bullock shall he carry forth without
F6 the camp unto a clean place, where the ashes are poured out, and
burn him on the wood with fire: where the ashes are poured out shall
he be burnt.
4:13 And if the whole congregation of Israel sin through
ignorance, and the thing be hid from the eyes of the assembly, and
they have done somewhat against any of the commandments of the LORD
concerning things which should not be done, and are guilty;
4:14 When the sin, which they have sinned against it, is
known, then the congregation shall offer a young bullock for the
sin, and bring him before the tabernacle of the congregation.
4:15 And the elders of the congregation shall lay their
hands upon the head of the bullock before the LORD: and the bullock
shall be killed before the LORD.
4:16 And the priest that is anointed shall bring of the
bullock's blood to the tabernacle of the congregation:
4:17 And the priest shall dip his finger in some of the
blood, and sprinkle it seven times before the LORD, even before the
vail.
4:18 And he shall put some of the blood upon the horns
of the altar which is before the LORD, that is in the tabernacle
of the congregation, and shall pour out all the blood at the bottom
of the altar of the burnt offering, which is at the door of the tabernacle
of the congregation.
4:19 And he shall take all his fat from him, and burn it
upon the altar.
4:20 And he shall do with the bullock as he did with the
bullock for a sin offering, so shall he do with this: and the priest
shall make an atonement for them, and it shall be forgiven them.
4:21 And he shall carry forth the bullock without the camp,
and burn him as he burned the first bullock: it is a sin offering
for the congregation.
4:22 When a ruler hath sinned, and done somewhat through
ignorance against any of the commandments of the LORD his God concerning
things which should not be done, and is guilty;
4:23 Or if his sin, wherein he hath sinned, come to his
knowledge; he shall bring his offering, a kid of the goats, a male
without blemish:
4:24 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the goat,
and kill it in the place where they kill the burnt offering before
the LORD: it is a sin offering.
4:25 And the priest shall take of the blood of the sin
offering with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the altar
of burnt offering, and shall pour out his blood at the bottom of the altar
of burnt offering.
4:26 And he shall burn all his fat upon the altar, as the
fat of the sacrifice of peace offerings: and the priest shall make
an atonement for him as concerning his sin, and it shall be forgiven
him.
4:27 And if any one of the common people sin through ignorance,
while he doeth somewhat against any of the commandments of the LORD
concerning things which ought not to be done, and be guilty;
4:28 Or if his sin, which he hath sinned, come to his knowledge:
then he shall bring his offering, a kid of the goats, a female without
blemish, for his sin which he hath sinned.
4:29 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the sin
offering, and slay the sin offering in the place of the burnt offering.
4:30 And the priest shall take of the blood thereof with
his finger, and put it upon the horns of the altar of burnt offering,
and shall pour out all the blood thereof at the bottom of the altar.
4:31 And he shall take away all the fat thereof, as the
fat is taken away from off the sacrifice of peace offerings; and
the priest shall burn it upon the altar for a sweet savour unto the LORD;
and the priest shall make an atonement for him, and it shall be forgiven
him.
4:32 And if he bring a lamb for a sin offering, he shall
bring it a female without blemish.
4:33 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the sin
offering, and slay it for a sin offering in the place where they
kill the burnt offering.
4:34 And the priest shall take of the blood of the sin
offering with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the altar
of burnt offering, and shall pour out all the blood thereof at the
bottom of the altar:
4:35 And he shall take away all the fat thereof, as the
fat of the lamb is taken away from the sacrifice of the peace offerings;
and the priest shall burn them upon the altar, according to the offerings
made by fire unto the LORD: and the priest shall make an atonement
for his sin that he hath committed, and it shall be forgiven him.
Leviticus 5 (King James Version)
5:1 And if a soul sin, and hear the voice of swearing, and
is a witness, whether he hath seen or known of it; if he do not utter
it, then he shall bear his iniquity.
5:2 Or if a soul touch any unclean thing, whether it be
a carcase of an unclean beast, or a carcase of unclean cattle, or
the carcase of unclean creeping things, and if it be hidden from
him; he also shall be unclean, and guilty.
5:3 Or if he touch the uncleanness of man, whatsoever uncleanness
it be that a man shall be defiled withal, and it be hid from him;
when he knoweth of it, then he shall be guilty.
5:4 Or if a soul swear, pronouncing with his lips to do
evil, or to do good, whatsoever it be that a man shall pronounce
with an oath, and it be hid from him; when he knoweth of it, then
he shall be guilty in one of these.
5:5 And it shall be, when he shall be guilty in one of
these things, that he shall confess that he hath sinned in that thing:
5:6 And he shall bring his trespass offering unto the LORD
for his sin which he hath sinned, a female from the flock, a lamb
or a kid of the goats, for a sin offering; and the priest shall make
an atonement for him concerning his sin.
5:7 And if he be not able to bring a lamb, then he shall
bring for his trespass, which he hath committed, two turtledoves,
or two young pigeons, unto the LORD; one for a sin offering, and the other
for a burnt offering.
5:8 And he shall bring them unto the priest, who shall
offer that which is for the sin offering first, and wring off his
head from his neck, but shall not divide it asunder:
5:9 And he shall sprinkle of the blood of the sin offering
upon the side of the altar; and the rest of the blood shall be wrung
out at the bottom of the altar: it is a sin offering.
5:10 And he shall offer the second for a burnt offering,
according to the manner: and the priest shall make an atonement
for him for his sin which he hath sinned, and it shall be forgiven
him.
5:11 But if he be not able to bring two turtledoves, or
two young pigeons, then he that sinned shall bring for his offering
the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a sin offering; he shall
put no oil upon it, neither shall he put any frankincense thereon:
for it is a sin offering.
5:12 Then shall he bring it to the priest, and the priest
shall take his handful of it, even a memorial thereof, and burn it
on the altar, according to the offerings made by fire unto the LORD:
it is a sin offering.
5:13 And the priest shall make an atonement for him as
touching his sin that he hath sinned in one of these, and it shall
be forgiven him: and the remnant shall be the priest's, as a meat
offering.
5:14 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
5:15 If a soul commit a trespass, and sin through ignorance,
in the holy things of the LORD; then he shall bring for his trespass
unto the LORD a ram without blemish out of the flocks, with thy estimation
by shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary, for a trespass
offering:
5:16 And he shall make amends for the harm that he hath
done in the holy thing, and shall add the fifth part thereto, and
give it unto the priest: and the priest shall make an atonement for
him with the ram of the trespass offering, and it shall be forgiven him.
5:17 And if a soul sin, and commit any of these things
which are forbidden to be done by the commandments of the LORD; though
he wist it not, yet is he guilty, and shall bear his iniquity.
5:18 And he shall bring a ram without blemish out of the
flock, with thy estimation, for a trespass offering, unto the priest:
and the priest shall make an atonement for him concerning his ignorance
wherein he erred and wist it not, and it shall be forgiven him.
5:19 It is a trespass offering: he hath certainly trespassed
against the LORD.
Leviticus 6 (King James Version)
6:1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
6:2 If a soul sin, and commit a trespass against the LORD,
and lie unto his neighbour in that which was delivered him to keep,
or in fellowship, or in a thing taken away by violence, or hath deceived
his neighbour;
6:3 Or have found that which was lost, and lieth concerning
it, and sweareth falsely; in any of all these that a man doeth, sinning
therein:
6:4 Then it shall be, because he hath sinned, and is guilty,
that he shall restore that which he took violently away, or the thing
which he hath deceitfully gotten, or that which was delivered him
to keep, or the lost thing which he found,
6:5 Or all that about which he hath sworn falsely; he shall
even restore it in the principal, and shall add the fifth part more
thereto, and give it unto him to whom it appertaineth, in the day
F10 of his trespass offering.
6:6 And he shall bring his trespass offering unto the LORD,
a ram without blemish out of the flock, with thy estimation, for
a trespass offering, unto the priest:
6:7 And the priest shall make an atonement for him before
the LORD: and it shall be forgiven him for any thing of all that
he hath done in trespassing therein.
6:8 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
6:9 Command Aaron and his sons, saying, This is the law
of the burnt offering: It is the burnt offering, because of the burning
upon the altar all night unto the morning, and the fire of the altar
shall be burning in it.
6:10 And the priest shall put on his linen garment, and
his linen breeches shall he put upon his flesh, and take up the ashes
which the fire hath consumed with the burnt offering on the altar,
and he shall put them beside the altar.
6:11 And he shall put off his garments, and put on other
garments, and carry forth the ashes without the camp unto a clean
place.
6:12 And the fire upon the altar shall be burning in it;
it shall not be put out: and the priest shall burn wood on it every
morning, and lay the burnt offering in order upon it; and he shall
burn thereon the fat of the peace offerings.
6:13 The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar; it
shall never go out.
6:14 And this is the law of the meat offering: the sons
of Aaron shall offer it before the LORD, before the altar.
6:15 And he shall take of it his handful, of the flour
of the meat offering, and of the oil thereof, and all the frankincense
which is upon the meat offering, and shall burn it upon the altar
for a sweet savour, even the memorial of it, unto the LORD.
6:16 And the remainder thereof shall Aaron and his sons
eat: with unleavened bread shall it be eaten in the holy place; in
the court of the tabernacle of the congregation they shall eat it.
6:17 It shall not be baken with leaven. I have given it
unto them for their portion of my offerings made by fire; it is most
holy, as is the sin offering, and as the trespass offering.
6:18 All the males among the children of Aaron shall eat
of it. It shall be a statute for ever in your generations concerning
the offerings of the LORD made by fire: every one that toucheth them
shall be holy.
6:19 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
6:20 This is the offering of Aaron and of his sons, which
they shall offer unto the LORD in the day when he is anointed; the
tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a meat offering perpetual,
half of it in the morning, and half thereof at night.
6:21 In a pan it shall be made with oil; and when it is
baken, thou shalt bring it in: and the baken pieces of the meat offering
shalt thou offer for a sweet savour unto the LORD.
6:22 And the priest of his sons that is anointed in his
stead shall offer it: it is a statute for ever unto the LORD; it
shall be wholly burnt.
6:23 For every meat offering for the priest shall be wholly
burnt: it shall not be eaten.
6:24 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
6:25 Speak unto Aaron and to his sons, saying, This is
the law of the sin offering: In the place where the burnt offering
is killed shall the sin offering be killed before the LORD: it is
most holy.
6:26 The priest that offereth it for sin shall eat it:
in the holy place shall it be eaten, in the court of the tabernacle
of the congregation.
6:27 Whatsoever shall touch the flesh thereof shall be
holy: and when there is sprinkled of the blood thereof upon any garment,
thou shalt wash that whereon it was sprinkled in the holy place.
6:28 But the earthen vessel wherein it is sodden shall
be broken: and if it be sodden in a brasen pot, it shall be both
scoured, and rinsed in water.
6:29 All the males among the priests shall eat thereof:
it is most holy.
6:30 And no sin offering, whereof any of the blood is brought
into the tabernacle of the congregation to reconcile withal in the
holy place, shall be eaten: it shall be burnt in the fire.
Leviticus 7 (King James Version)
7:1 Likewise this is the law of the trespass offering: it
is most holy.
7:2 In the place where they kill the burnt offering shall
they kill the trespass offering: and the blood thereof shall he sprinkle
round about upon the altar.
7:3 And he shall offer of it all the fat thereof; the rump,
and the fat that covereth the inwards,
7:4 And the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, which
is by the flanks, and the caul that is above the liver, with the
kidneys, it shall he take away:
7:5 And the priest shall burn them upon the altar for an
offering made by fire unto the LORD: it is a trespass offering.
7:6 Every male among the priests shall eat thereof: it
shall be eaten in the holy place: it is most holy.
7:7 As the sin offering is, so is the trespass offering:
there is one law for them: the priest that maketh atonement therewith
shall have it.
7:8 And the priest that offereth any man's burnt offering,
even the priest shall have to himself the skin of the burnt offering
which he hath offered.
7:9 And all the meat offering that is baken in the oven,
and all that is dressed in the fryingpan, and in the pan, shall be
the priest's that offereth it.
7:10 And every meat offering, mingled with oil, and dry,
shall all the sons of Aaron have, one as much as another.
7:11 And this is the law of the sacrifice of peace offerings,
which he shall offer unto the LORD.
7:12 If he offer it for a thanksgiving, then he shall offer
with the sacrifice of thanksgiving unleavened cakes mingled with
oil, and unleavened wafers anointed with oil, and cakes mingled with oil,
of fine flour, fried.
7:13 Besides the cakes, he shall offer for his offering
leavened bread with the sacrifice of thanksgiving of his peace offerings.
7:14 And of it he shall offer one out of the whole oblation
for an heave offering unto the LORD, and it shall be the priest's
that sprinkleth the blood of the peace offerings.
7:15 And the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings
for thanksgiving shall be eaten the same day that it is offered;
he shall not leave any of it until the morning.
7:16 But if the sacrifice of his offering be a vow, or
a voluntary offering, it shall be eaten the same day that he offereth
his sacrifice: and on the morrow also the remainder of it shall be
eaten:
7:17 But the remainder of the flesh of the sacrifice on
the third day shall be burnt with fire.
7:18 And if any of the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace
offerings be eaten at all on the third day, it shall not be accepted,
neither shall it be imputed unto him that offereth it: it shall be
an abomination, and the soul that eateth of it shall bear his iniquity.
7:19 And the flesh that toucheth any unclean thing shall
not be eaten; it shall be burnt with fire: and as for the flesh,
all that be clean shall eat thereof.
7:20 But the soul that eateth of the flesh of the sacrifice
of peace offerings, that pertain unto the LORD, having his uncleanness
upon him, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.
7:21 Moreover the soul that shall touch any unclean thing,
as the uncleanness of man, or any unclean beast, or any abominable
unclean thing, and eat of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings,
which pertain unto the LORD, even that soul shall be cut off from
his people.
7:22 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
7:23 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, Ye shall
eat no manner of fat, of ox, or of sheep, or of goat.
7:24 And the fat of the beast that dieth of itself, and
the fat of that which is torn with beasts, F12 may be used in any
other use: but ye shall in no wise eat of it.
7:25 For whosoever eateth the fat of the beast, of which
men offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD, even the soul that
eateth it shall be cut off from his people.
7:26 Moreover ye shall eat no manner of blood, whether
it be of fowl or of beast, in any of your dwellings.
7:27 Whatsoever soul it be that eateth any manner of blood,
even that soul shall be cut off from his people.
7:28 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
7:29 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, He that
offereth the sacrifice of his peace offerings unto the LORD shall
bring his oblation unto the LORD of the sacrifice of his peace offerings.
7:30 His own hands shall bring the offerings of the LORD
made by fire, the fat with the breast, it shall he bring, that the
breast may be waved for a wave offering before the LORD.
7:31 And the priest shall burn the fat upon the altar:
but the breast shall be Aaron's and his sons'.
7:32 And the right shoulder shall ye give unto the priest
for an heave offering of the sacrifices of your peace offerings.
7:33 He among the sons of Aaron, that offereth the blood
of the peace offerings, and the fat, shall have the right shoulder
for his part.
7:34 For the wave breast and the heave shoulder have I
taken of the children of Israel from off the sacrifices of their
peace offerings, and have given them unto Aaron the priest and unto
his sons by a statute for ever from among the children of Israel.
7:35 This is the portion of the anointing of Aaron, and
of the anointing of his sons, out of the offerings of the LORD made
by fire, in the day when he presented them to minister unto the LORD
in the priest's office;
7:36 Which the LORD commanded to be given them of the children
of Israel, in the day that he anointed them, by a statute for ever
throughout their generations.
7:37 This is the law of the burnt offering, of the meat
offering, and of the sin offering, and of the trespass offering,
and of the consecrations, and of the sacrifice of the peace offerings;
7:38 Which the LORD commanded Moses in mount Sinai, in
the day that he commanded the children of Israel to offer their oblations
unto the LORD, in the wilderness of Sinai.
Numbers 15 (King James Version)
15:1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
15:2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them,
When ye be come into the land of your habitations, which I give unto
you,
15:3 And will make an offering by fire unto the LORD, a
burnt offering, or a sacrifice in performing F35 a vow, or in a freewill
offering, or in your solemn feasts, to make a sweet savour unto the
LORD, of the herd, or of the flock:
15:4 Then shall he that offereth his offering unto the
LORD bring a meat offering of a tenth deal of flour mingled with
the fourth part of an hin of oil.
15:5 And the fourth part of an hin of wine for a drink
offering shalt thou prepare with the burnt offering or sacrifice,
for one lamb.
15:6 Or for a ram, thou shalt prepare for a meat offering
two tenth deals of flour mingled with the third part of an hin of
oil.
15:7 And for a drink offering thou shalt offer the third
part of an hin of wine, for a sweet savour unto the LORD.
15:8 And when thou preparest a bullock for a burnt offering,
or for a sacrifice in performing a vow, or peace offerings unto the
LORD:
15:9 Then shall he bring with a bullock a meat offering
of three tenth deals of flour mingled with half an hin of oil.
15:10 And thou shalt bring for a drink offering half an
hin of wine, for an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto
the LORD.
15:11 Thus shall it be done for one bullock, or for one
ram, or for a lamb, or a kid.
15:12 According to the number that ye shall prepare, so
shall ye do to every one according to their number.
15:13 All that are born of the country shall do these things
after this manner, in offering an offering made by fire, of a sweet
savour unto the LORD.
15:14 And if a stranger sojourn with you, or whosoever
be among you in your generations, and will offer an offering made
by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD; as ye do, so he shall do.
15:15 One ordinance shall be both for you of the congregation,
and also for the stranger that sojourneth with you, an ordinance
for ever in your generations: as ye are, so shall the stranger be
before the LORD.
15:16 One law and one manner shall be for you, and for
the stranger that sojourneth with you.
15:17 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
15:18 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them,
When ye come into the land whither I bring you,
15:19 Then it shall be, that, when ye eat of the bread
of the land, ye shall offer up an heave offering unto the LORD.
15:20 Ye shall offer up a cake of the first of your dough
for an heave offering: as ye do the heave offering of the threshingfloor,
so shall ye heave it.
15:21 Of the first of your dough ye shall give unto the
LORD an heave offering in your generations.
15:22 And if ye have erred, and not observed all these
commandments, which the LORD hath spoken unto Moses,
15:23 Even all that the LORD hath commanded you by the
hand of Moses, from the day that the LORD commanded Moses, and henceforward
among your generations;
15:24 Then it shall be, if ought be committed by ignorance
without the knowledge of the congregation, that all the congregation
shall offer one young bullock for a burnt offering, for a sweet savour
unto the LORD, with his meat offering, and his drink offering, according
to the manner, and one kid of the goats for a sin offering.
15:25 And the priest shall make an atonement for all the
congregation of the children of Israel, and it shall be forgiven
them; for it is ignorance: and they shall bring their offering, a
sacrifice made by fire unto the LORD, and their sin offering before the
LORD, for their ignorance:
15:26 And it shall be forgiven all the congregation of
the children of Israel, and the stranger that sojourneth among them;
seeing all the people were in ignorance.
15:27 And if any soul sin through ignorance, then he shall
bring a she goat of the first year for a sin offering.
15:28 And the priest shall make an atonement for the soul
that sinneth ignorantly, when he sinneth by ignorance before the
LORD, to make an atonement for him; and it shall be forgiven him.
15:29 Ye shall have one law for him that sinneth through
ignorance, both for him that is born among the children of Israel,
and for the stranger that sojourneth among them.
15:30 But the soul that doeth ought presumptuously, whether
he be born in the land, or a stranger, the same reproacheth the LORD;
and that soul shall be cut off from among his people.
15:31 Because he hath despised the word of the LORD, and
hath broken his commandment, that soul shall utterly be cut off;
his iniquity shall be upon him.
15:32 And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness,
they found a man that gathered sticks upon the sabbath day.
15:33 And they that found him gathering sticks brought
him unto Moses and Aaron, and unto all the congregation.
15:34 And they put him in ward, because it was not declared
what should be done to him.
15:35 And the LORD said unto Moses, The man shall be surely
put to death: all the congregation shall stone him with stones without
the camp.
15:36 And all the congregation brought him without the
camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died; as the LORD commanded
Moses.
15:37 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
15:38 Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that
they make them fringes in the borders of their garments throughout
their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders
a ribband of blue:
15:39 And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may
look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and
do them; and that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes,
after which ye use to go a whoring:
15:40 That ye may remember, and do all my commandments,
and be holy unto your God.
15:41 I am the LORD your God, which brought you out of
the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am the LORD your God.
NEW TESTAMENT
Matthew 8:1-4 (King James
Version)
Alternate translation below
8:1 When he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes
followed him.
8:2 And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him,
saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
8:3 And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying,
I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
8:4 And Jesus saith unto him, See thou tell no man; but
go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded,
for a testimony unto them.
Matthew 8:1-4 (Good News
Bible)
Alternate translation above
8:1 When Jesus came down from the hill, large crowds followed
him.
8:2 Then a man suffering from a dreaded skin disease came
to him, knelt down before him, and said, "Sir, if you want to, you can
make me clean."
8:3 Jesus reached out and touched him. "I do want to,"
he answered. "Be clean!" At once the man was healed of his disease.
8:4 Then Jesus said to him, "Listen! Don't tell anyone,
but go straight to the priest and let him examine you; then in order to
prove to everyone that you are cured, offer the sacrifice that Moses ordered."
Mark 1:35-44 (Good News Bible)
1:35 Very early the next morning, long before daylight,
Jesus got up and left the house. He went out of town to a lonely
place, where he prayed.
1:36 But Simon and his companions went out searching for
him,
1:37 and when they found him, they said, "Everyone is looking
for you."
1:38 But Jesus answered, "We must go on to the other villages
around here. I have to preach in them also, because that is why I came."
1:39 So he traveled all over Galilee, preaching in the
synagogues and driving out demons.
1:40 A man suffering from a dreaded skin disease came to
Jesus, knelt down, and begged him for help. "If you want to," he said,
"you can make me clean."
1:41 Jesus was filled with pity, and reached out and touched
him. "I do want to," he answered. "Be clean!"
1:42 At once the disease left the man, and he was clean.
1:43 Then Jesus spoke sternly to him and sent him away
at once,
1:44 after saying to him, "Listen, don't tell anyone about
this. But go straight to the priest and let him examine you; then in order
to prove to everyone that you are cured, offer the sacrifice that Moses
ordered."
Luke 2:20-24 (King James Version)
2:20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising
God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told
unto them.
2:21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising
of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the
angel before he was conceived in the womb.
2:22 And when the days of her purification according to
the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem,
to present him to the Lord;
2:23 (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male
that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;)
2:24 And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is
said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young
pigeons.
Acts 14:1-20 (Good News Bible)
14:8 In Lystra there was a crippled man who had been lame
from birth and had never been able to walk.
14:9 He sat there and listened to Paul's words. Paul saw
that he believed and could be healed, so he looked straight at him
14:10 and said in a loud voice, "Stand up straight on your
feet!" The man jumped up and started walking around.
14:11 When the crowds saw what Paul had done, they started
shouting in their own Lycaonian language, "The gods have become like men
and have come down to us!"
14:12 They gave Barnabas the name Zeus, and Paul the name
Hermes, because he was the chief speaker.
14:13 The priest of the god Zeus, whose temple stood just
outside the town, brought bulls and flowers to the gate, for he and the
crowds wanted to offer sacrifice to the apostles.
14:14 When Barnabas and Paul heard what they were about
to do, they tore their clothes and ran into the middle of the crowd, shouting,
14:15 "Why are you doing this? We ourselves are only human
beings like you! We are here to announce the Good News, to turn you away
from these worthless things to the living God, who made heaven, earth,
sea, and all that is in them.
14:16 In the past he allowed all people to go their own
way.
14:17 But he has always given evidence of his existence
by the good things he does: he gives you rain from heaven and crops at
the right times; he gives you food and fills your hearts with happiness."
14:18 Even with these words the apostles could hardly keep
the crowd from offering a sacrifice to them.
Romans 12:1-10 (Good News Bible)
12:1 So then, my friends, because of God's great mercy to
us I appeal to you: Offer yourselves as a living sacrifice to God, dedicated
to his service and pleasing to him. This is the true worship that you should
offer.
12:2 Do not conform yourselves to the standards of this
world, but let God transform you inwardly by a complete change of your
mind. Then you will be able to know the will of Godówhat is good and is
pleasing to him and is perfect.
12:3 And because of God's gracious gift to me I say to
every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you should.
Instead, be modest in your thinking, and judge yourself according to the
amount of faith that God has given you.
12:4 We have many parts in the one body, and all these
parts have different functions.
12:5 In the same way, though we are many, we are one body
in union with Christ, and we are all joined to each other as different
parts of one body.
12:6 So we are to use our different gifts in accordance
with the grace that God has given us. If our gift is to speak God's message,
we should do it according to the faith that we have;
12:7 if it is to serve, we should serve; if it is to teach,
we should teach;
12:8 if it is to encourage others, we should do so. Whoever
shares with others should do it generously; whoever has authority should
work hard; whoever shows kindness to others should do it cheerfully.
12:9 Love must be completely sincere. Hate what is evil,
hold on to what is good.
12:10 Love one another warmly as Christians, and be eager
to show respect for one another.
Ephesians 5:1-10 (Good News Bible)
5:1 Since you are God's dear children, you must try to be
like him.
5:2 Your life must be controlled by love, just as Christ
loved us and gave his life for us as a sweet-smelling offering and sacrifice
that pleases God.
Philippians 2:10-22 (King James Version
(Authorized))
2:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of
things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;
2:11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ
is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not
as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your
own salvation with fear and trembling.
2:13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and
to do of his good pleasure.
2:14 Do all things without murmurings and disputings:
2:15 That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of
God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among
whom ye shine as lights in the world;
2:16 Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice
in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in
vain.
2:17 Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service
of your faith, I joy, and rejoice with you all.
Hebrews 9:1-17 (Good News Bible)
9:1 The first covenant had rules for worship and a place
made for worship as well.
9:2 A tent was put up, the outer one, which was called
the Holy Place. In it were the lampstand and the table with the bread offered
to God.
9:3 Behind the second curtain was the tent called the Most
Holy Place.
9:4 In it were the gold altar for the burning of incense
and the Covenant Box all covered with gold and containing the gold jar
with the manna in it, Aaron's stick that had sprouted leaves, and the two
stone tablets with the commandments written on them.
9:5 Above the Box were the winged creatures representing
God's presence, with their wings spread over the place where sins were
forgiven. But now is not the time to explain everything in detail.
9:6 This is how those things have been arranged. The priests
go into the outer tent every day to perform their duties,
9:7 but only the high priest goes into the inner tent,
and he does so only once a year. He takes with him blood which he offers
to God on behalf of himself and for the sins
which the people have committed without knowing they were sinning.
9:8 The Holy Spirit clearly teaches from all these arrangements
that the way into the Most Holy Place has not yet been opened as long as
the outer tent still stands.
9:9 This is a symbol which points to the present time.
It means that the offerings and animal sacrifices presented to God cannot
make the worshiper's heart perfect,
9:10 since they have to do only with food, drink, and various
purification ceremonies. These are all outward rules, which apply
only until the time when God will establish the new order.
9:11 But Christ has already come as the High Priest of
the good things that are already here. The tent in which he serves
is greater and more perfect; it is not a tent made by human hands, that
is, it is not a part of this created world.
9:12 When Christ went through the tent and entered once
and for all into the Most Holy Place, he did not take the blood of goats
and bulls to offer as a sacrifice; rather, he took his own blood and obtained
eternal salvation for us.
9:13 The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a burnt
calf are sprinkled on the people who are ritually unclean, and this purifies
them by taking away their ritual impurity.
9:14 Since this is true, how much more is accomplished
by the blood of Christ! Through the eternal Spirit he offered himself as
a perfect sacrifice to God. His blood will purify our consciences from
useless rituals, so that we may serve the living God.
9:15 For this reason Christ is the one who arranges a new
covenant, so that those who have been called by God may receive the eternal
blessings that God has promised. This can be done because there has been
a death which sets people free from the wrongs they did while the first
covenant was in effect.
9:16 In the case of a will it is necessary to prove that
the person who made it has died,
9:17 for a will means nothing while the person who made
it is alive; it goes into effect only after his death.
9:18 That is why even the first covenant went into effect
only with the use of blood.
9:19 First, Moses proclaimed to the people all the commandments
as set forth in the Law. Then he took the blood of bulls and goats,
mixed it with water, and sprinkled it on the book of the Law and all the
people, using a sprig of hyssop and some red wool.
9:20 He said, "This is the blood which seals the covenant
that God has commanded you to obey."
9:21 In the same way Moses also sprinkled the blood on
the Sacred Tent and over all the things used in worship.
9:22 Indeed, according to the Law almost everything is
purified by blood, and sins are forgiven only if blood is poured out.
9:23 Those things, which are copies of the heavenly originals,
had to be purified in that way. But the heavenly things themselves require
much better sacrifices.
9:24 For Christ did not go into a Holy Place made by human
hands, which was a copy of the real one. He went into heaven itself, where
he now appears on our behalf in the presence of God.
9:25 The Jewish high priest goes into the Most Holy Place
every year with the blood of an animal. But Christ did not go in to offer
himself many times,
9:26 for then he would have had to suffer many times ever
since the creation of the world. Instead, now when all ages of time
are nearing the end, he has appeared once and for all, to remove sin through
the sacrifice of himself.
9:27 Everyone must die once, and after that be judged by
God.
9:28 In the same manner Christ also was offered in sacrifice
once to take away the sins of many. He will appear a second time,
not to deal with sin, but to save those who are waiting for him.
Hebrews 10 (King James Version)
Alternate translation below
10:1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come,
and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which
they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.
10:2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered?
because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience
of sins.
10:3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again
made of sins every year.
10:4 For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and
of goats should take away sins.
10:5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith,
Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared
me:
10:6 In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast
had no pleasure.
10:7 Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book
it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.
10:8 Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt
offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure
therein; which are offered by the law;
10:9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He
taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
10:10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering
of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
10:11 And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering
oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins:
10:12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice
for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;
10:13 From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made
his footstool.
10:14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them
that are sanctified.
10:15 Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for
after that he had said before,
10:16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after
those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in
their minds will I write them;
10:17 And their F32 sins and iniquities will I remember
no more.
10:18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more
offering for sin.
10:19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into
the holiest by the blood of Jesus,
10:20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated
for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;
10:21 And having an high priest over the house of God;
10:22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance
of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our
bodies washed with pure water.
10:23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without
wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)
10:24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love
and to good works:
10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together,
as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more,
as ye see the day approaching.
10:26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received
the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
10:27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and
fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.
10:28 He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under
two or three witnesses:
10:29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he
be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath
counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy
thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
10:30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth
unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge
his people.
10:31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the
living God.
10:32 But call to remembrance the former days, in which,
after ye were illuminated, ye endured a great fight of afflictions;
10:33 Partly, whilst ye were made a gazingstock both by
reproaches and afflictions; and partly, whilst ye became companions of
them that were so used.
10:34 For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took
joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have
in heaven a better and an enduring substance.
10:35 Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath
great recompence of reward.
10:36 For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have
done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.
10:37 For yet a little while, and he that shall come will
come, and will not tarry.
10:38 Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man
draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.
10:39 But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition;
but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.
Hebrews 10 (Good News Bible)
Alternate translation above
10:1 The Jewish Law is not a full and faithful model of
the real things; it is only a faint outline of the good things to come.
The same sacrifices are offered forever, year after year. How can the Law,
then, by means of these sacrifices make perfect the
people who come to God?
10:2 If the people worshiping God had really been purified
from their sins, they would not feel guilty of sin any more, and all sacrifices
would stop.
10:3 As it is, however, the sacrifices serve year after
year to remind people of their sins.
10:4 For the blood of bulls and goats can never take away
sins.
10:5 For this reason, when Christ was about to come into
the world, he said to God: "You do not want sacrifices and offerings, but
you have prepared a body for me.
10:6 You are not pleased with animals burned whole on the
altar or with sacrifices to take away sins.
10:7 Then I said, "Here I am, to do your will, O God, just
as it is written of me in the book of the Law.' "
10:8 First he said, "You neither want nor are you pleased
with sacrifices and offerings or with animals burned on the altar and the
sacrifices to take away sins." He said this even though all these sacrifices
are offered according to the Law.
10:9 Then he said, "Here I am, O God, to do your will."
So God does away with all the old sacrifices and puts the sacrifice of
Christ in their place.
10:10 Because Jesus Christ did what God wanted him to do,
we are all purified from sin by the offering that he made of his own body
once and for all.
10:11 Every Jewish priest performs his services every day
and offers the same sacrifices many times; but these sacrifices can never
take away sins.
10:12 Christ, however, offered one sacrifice for sins,
an offering that is effective forever, and then he sat down at the right
side of God.
10:13 There he now waits until God puts his enemies as
a footstool under his feet.
10:14 With one sacrifice, then, he has made perfect forever
those who are purified from sin.
10:15 And the Holy Spirit also gives us his witness. First
he says,
10:16 "This is the covenant that I will make with them
in the days to come, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts
and write them on their minds."
10:17 And then he says, "I will not remember their sins
and evil deeds any longer."
10:18 So when these have been forgiven, an offering to
take away sins is no longer needed.
10:19 We have, then, my friends, complete freedom to go
into the Most Holy Place by means of the death of Jesus.
10:20 He opened for us a new way, a living way, through
the curtainóthat is, through his own body.
10:21 We have a great priest in charge of the house of
God.
10:22 So let us come near to God with a sincere heart and
a sure faith, with hearts that have been purified from a guilty conscience
and with bodies washed with clean water.
10:23 Let us hold on firmly to the hope we profess, because
we can trust God to keep his promise.
10:24 Let us be concerned for one another, to help one
another to show love and to do good.
10:25 Let us not give up the habit of meeting together,
as some are doing. Instead, let us encourage one another all the more,
since you see that the Day of the Lord is coming nearer.
10:26 For there is no longer any sacrifice that will take
away sins if we purposely go on sinning after the truth has been made known
to us.
10:27 Instead, all that is left is to wait in fear for
the coming Judgment and the fierce fire which will destroy those who oppose
God!
10:28 Anyone who disobeys the Law of Moses is put to death
without any mercy when judged guilty from the evidence of two or more witnesses.
10:29 What, then, of those who despise the Son of God?
who treat as a cheap thing the blood of God's covenant which purified them
from sin? who insult the Spirit of
grace? Just think how much worse is the punishment they will deserve!
10:30 For we know who said, "I will take revenge, I will
repay"; and who also said, "The Lord will judge his people."
10:31 It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of
the living God!
10:32 Remember how it was with you in the past. In those
days, after God's light had shone on you, you suffered many things, yet
were not defeated by the struggle.
10:33 You were at times publicly insulted and mistreated,
and at other times you were ready to join those who were being treated
in this way.
10:34 You shared the sufferings of prisoners, and when
all your belongings were seized, you endured your loss gladly, because
you knew that you still possessed something much better, which would last
forever.
10:35 Do not lose your courage, then, because it brings
with it a great reward.
10:36 You need to be patient, in order to do the will of
God and receive what he promises.
10:37 For, as the scripture says, "Just a little while
longer, and he who is coming will come; he will not delay.
10:38 My righteous people, however, will believe and live;
but if any of them turns back, I will not be pleased with them."
10:39 We are not people who turn back and are lost. Instead,
we have faith and are saved.
1 Peter 1:1-25 (Good News
Bible)
1:1 From Peter, apostle of Jesus Christó To God's chosen
people who live as refugees scattered throughout the provinces of Pontus,
Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia.
1:2 You were chosen according to the purpose of God the
Father and were made a holy people by his Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ
and be purified by his blood. May grace and peace be yours in full measure.
1:3 Let us give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord
Jesus Christ! Because of his great mercy he gave us new life by raising
Jesus Christ from death. This fills us with a living hope,
1:4 and so we look forward to possessing the rich blessings
that God keeps for his people. He keeps them for you in heaven, where they
cannot decay or spoil or fade away.
1:5 They are for you, who through faith are kept safe by
God's power for the salvation which is ready to be revealed at the end
of time.
1:6 Be glad about this, even though it may now be necessary
for you to be sad for a while because of the many kinds of trials you suffer.
1:7 Their purpose is to prove that your faith is genuine.
Even gold, which can be destroyed, is tested by fire; and so your faith,
which is much more precious than gold, must also be tested, so that it
may endure. Then you will receive praise and glory and honor on the Day
when Jesus Christ is revealed.
1:8 You love him, although you have not seen him, and you
believe in him, although you do not now see him. So you rejoice with a
great and glorious joy which words cannot express,
1:9 because you are receiving the salvation of your souls,
which is the purpose of your faith in him.
1:10 It was concerning this salvation that the prophets
made careful search and investigation, and they prophesied about this gift
which God would give you.
1:11 They tried to find out when the time would be and
how it would come. This was the time to which Christ's Spirit in them was
pointing, in predicting the sufferings that Christ would have to endure
and the glory that would follow.
1:12 God revealed to these prophets that their work was
not for their own benefit, but for yours, as they spoke about those things
which you have now heard from the messengers who announced the Good News
by the power of the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. These are things which
even the angels would like to understand.
1:13 So then, have your minds ready for action. Keep alert
and set your hope completely on the blessing which will be given you when
Jesus Christ is revealed.
1:14 Be obedient to God, and do not allow your lives to
be shaped by those desires you had when you were still ignorant.
1:15 Instead, be holy in all that you do, just as God who
called you is holy.
1:16 The scripture says, "Be holy because I am holy."
1:17 You call him Father, when you pray to God, who judges
all people by the same standard, according to what each one has done; so
then, spend the rest of your lives here on earth in reverence for him.
1:18 For you know what was paid to set you free from the
worthless manner of life handed down by your ancestors. It was not something
that can be destroyed, such as silver or gold;
1:19 it was the costly sacrifice of Christ, who was like
a lamb without defect or flaw.
1:20 He had been chosen by God before the creation of the
world and was revealed in these last days for your sake.
1:21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from
death and gave him glory; and so your faith and hope are fixed on God.
1:22 Now that by your obedience to the truth you have purified
yourselves and have come to have a sincere love for other believers, love
one another earnestly with all your heart.
1:23 For through the living and eternal word of God you
have been born again as the children of a parent who is immortal, not mortal.
1:24 As the scripture says, "All human beings are like
grass, and all their glory is like wild flowers. The grass withers, and
the flowers fall,
1:25 but the word of the Lord remains forever." This word
is the Good News that was proclaimed to you. |
