The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA) is a national program providing free assistance to low income, elderly, limited English proficient and disabled individuals who require assistance in preparing their tax returns. Our mission is to provide assistance to individuals who cannot afford the services of a paid professional tax preparer. 

SFSU VITA Program is one of the biggest programs at San Francisco State University with the assistance of 200 volunteers (SFSU students) every semester.  Each year the program provides volunteers with IRS certified training sessions during the beginning of each tax season, where students learn about the tax practice and engage themselves in the real world of tax.

If your 2011 household income was less than $49,000, you can get free tax help at SFSU VITA.  We will be located at SCI205 (Science building) and we will start operations on January 31st, 2012 (Tuesday) until April 18th, 2012 (Wednesday).  Our IRS certified tax preparers will help you get the refund you deserve.  Please be advised that there are certain things you will need to bring to the site in order for VITA volunteers to be able to prepare your tax return. 

Taxpayers bring your: Photo ID, Social Security or ITIN card of all family members, all W-2s, 1099s (1042s), and 1098T (if any), bank account & routing number if you prefer direct deposit, and last year's tax return.  Other income/expense information: total tuition fees & expenses, total expenses paid for child/day care, Tax ID #, and landlord information (if any).
