Digital
Murals and Answers
I will become an expert in Digital Murals. I will research the history of murals, original and internet information. I will be interviewing a member of Galeria de la Raza about the subject. I will document my finding with the project’s technical requirements. What are Digital Murals and where can they be found in San Francisco? When searching google for answers one of the first sites to appear is Galeria de la Raza, an interdisciplinary Chicano/Latino Space for Art, Thought and Activism. Accordingly, “Galería de la Raza's Digital Mural Project (DMP) encourages the use of the latest digital technology to create innovative public art. Building on Galería's 30-year history of painting murals in San Francisco's Mission District, the DMP seeks to push the mural tradition forward through the use of new technologies to address issues confronting the Latino communities.Initiated by artist/activist John Leaños and Galería, the series of digital murals has demonstrated technical sophistication, visual boldness and strong political content. Some of the themes explored by the murals include the gentrification of San Francisco's Mission District, historical amnesia, the history of cultural displacement in the Mission, queer Latina issues and racial profiling.”-Galeria de la Raza (Programs: Digital Mural) http://userwww.sfsu.edu/~art511_c/tele07/tgmasterf/final%20project/finalproject/tyler/final/ty6_files/ty5_files/flashingbanner/ty.html |

From
Rhizome's 2005-2006 Comissions, "Panel Junction" by Andy Deck
An online exquisite corpse exercise, Panel Junction lets you claim space on a comic page, and then illustrate your own panel using a Java-based interface that works like Microsoft Paint. You can draw shapes, select brush width and color, upload a photo, link to a hosted photo, or choose to edit from a list of images that have already been uploaded by other users. When everything is finished, all the pages are edited together to create a user-generated graphic novel. Page composition is ultimately up to Andy, though. The interface is detailed and easy to use, and the aesthetic allows for a clear presentation of information. Even though he has a schedule, it still remains unclear how the final decisions are made, as any user is able to alter the existing page surface until it is closed.(?) http://artcontext.org/act/05/panel/ |

Rhizome's 2005-2006 Commisions---"Eternal Sunset" by Adriaan
Stellingwerff
A unique site dedicated to capturing the sunset around the globe. A site where time folds back upon itself because darkness never arrives. A collage of webcam pictures that range from the beautiful to the mundane. Aptly named---utilizes "272 west facing web cams across 51 countires." Also entices viewer to become a participant by offering extras such as an overview of "upcoming" sunsets. The viewer can simply move his/her mouse over a group of four images, each one promising a sunset as well as providing specifics such as the city, country, latitude, longitude, owner of webcam, and amount of time until the next sunset. http://www.eternalsunset.net |

From
Rhizome's 2006-2007 Comissions, "Vidopedia" by Fritz Donnelly and Nadia
Anderson
Vidopedia is (technically) a user-generated encylopedia of filmed actions. The goal is to strip away the ever-present eye of the author by only catalogging verbs. Users can search by verbs and broad verb clusters to find short films illustrating all actions associated. Ultimately, the site would be a library that explored linguistic properties of image. However, the site appears to be under construction, none of the content is user generated, and all of the videos are hosted by Youtube. This idea seems thoughtful and ambitious, but flawed in its design and execution. The site navigation is counter-intuitive and the videos thus far are uninspired and do not serve to illustrate the core concept very well. I was surprised to see this on Rhizome, actually. http://www.vidopedia.com |

From the
2006 Webby Awards, "Wordcount" by Jonathan Harris
Jonathan Harris' Wordcount is an index of 86,800 of the most commonly used english words, based on the British National Corpus. You can search a word alone or a number rank. The lesser used words are ranked lower and the commonly used words are ranked higher. For instance, "the" is ranked as the most commonly used english word. The site is clean and intuitive-it basically serves to launch the Wordcount app. The Wordcount interface is also minimalistically stylish. It presents the words on a time line, with a small plotted graph below display where you are on the word map. The application has spawned many inquiries into the way we use our language (english speakers), and it allows for many associations to be made with words and their distance from each other in the index. While the site design is minimal, the concept is robust. http://www.wordcount.org |

2005-2006 Triptych---by Peter Horvath
A unique collection of short film clips by artist Peter Horvath. The videos (of which there are 3 positioned next to each other) depict random events of everyday life---or more specifically events that capture either motion, stillness, or resistance. It seems like it would not be interesting but strangely enough the videos intrigue the viewer and it becomes a beautiful play of inconsistent silent movies that keep your attention and heighten curiosity. Presented in a very clean and simple panoramic sort of format which really draws the viewers eyes to all that is happening. http://rhizome.org/artbase/36533/triptych |
