Arabic 101: First Semester Arabic ( 5 units)

Basic elementary Arabic. Conversation in the language, diction, reading, study of the fundamentals of grammar, simple oral and written exercises, and an introduction to Arabic-speaking cultures.

 

Arabic 102: Second Semester Arabic

( 5 units)

Continuation of First Semester Arabic.

Arabic 103: Third Semester Arabic (5 units)

Understanding, speaking, reading, and writing Modern Standard Arabic at the intermediate level.

 

Arabic 104: Fourth Semester Arabic

calligraphyclassArabic 104 is designed to review, advance and expand students’ knowledge of the Arabic language. The primary objective is to extend students’ comprehension, communicative and writing abilities in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA).   This course will give students the opportunity to further improve their oral and writing skills and will help them work with MSA in a variety of contexts that foreground various linguistic skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking), in addition to a rich cultural component. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to demonstrate better communication abilities, understand narrative, and describe in a variety of time frames as well as speak and write in paragraph-length discourses.

 

Arabic 206: Intermediate Conversation (3 units)

The development of conversational skills focusing on topic-structures drills and activities appropriate to the context in which the language will be spoken.

 

Arabic 300: Reading Qur'anic Arabic

(3 units)

An introduction to readings of the Qur'an, with emphasis on oral quality and literary value.

 

Arabic 401: Arab Culture and Identity in English (3 units)

Arab cultures in context of history of Arab world, through its religious and ethnic diversity, Arab family structures, values, traditions and customs. Introduction of Arabic literatures and music.

 

Arabic 600: Modern Arabic Literature and Film in English (3 units)

Fostering critical skills in reading literary texts and cultivating appreciation of literary concepts through different textual media. Understanding dynamics of exchange between modern Arabic fiction and film, including narrative elements.

 

Arabic 650/850: Modern Arabic Fiction in English (3 units)

Introduction to modern Arabic literature and the intertwining of fiction and history. Paired with ARAB 850. Students who have completed ARAB 650 may not take ARAB 850 for credit.
