Sociocultural Adaptation of Third Culture Kids:

The Influence of Individual, Familial and Societal Factors.

Why this study is Important:

Most of the published research on adolescents living abroad, or as they are sometimes called, “Third Culture Kids” is from adult populations and conducted using retrospective research.

Further, many of these studies have focused on outcome variables and less on the process of  adaptation. While these studies illuminate some of the outcome characteristics of adolescents living abroad, they do not provide insight into the processes by which these characteristics develop.

These past studies have provided useful information from which to begin to understand the experience of adolescents living abroad. However, there is a lack of research that investigates the current adolescent experience of international living.

This study proposes to investigate the unique experience of adolescent Third Culture Kids, and will do so while they are currently living abroad.
