About the Associate Dean

Amy Sueyoshi previously held a joint appointment in Race and Resistance Studies and Sexuality Studies. She joined the faculty at San Francisco State University in Fall 2002 after completing a Ph.D. in U.S. history from UCLA. She only teaches one course a year due to her administrative responsibilities.

Queer Compulsions: Race, Nation, and Sexuality in the Affairs of Yone Noguchi

Poet Yone Noguchi, more famously as known as the father of acclaimed artist Isamu Noguchi, enmeshed himself in several duplicitous affairs at the turn of the century. As Yone wrote passionate letters of love to western writer Charles Warren Stoddard, he proposed marriage to Alabama’s first historian Ethel Armes and impregnated editor Léonie Gilmour. Private fantasies and frustrated intimacies attest to how even the most seemingly selfish acts of sexuality are bound up in socio-cultural norms.

Animating Anxieties: Middle Class Meanings of Race, Gender, and Sexuality in San Francisco, 1895-1924

In the late 1890s, gender and sexuality in San Francisco seemed out of control. Divorce rates climbed, women were becoming mannish, and extramarital sex seemed unstoppable. Social critics protested the seeming chaos, projecting their moral fears on city Asians. Ethnic characterizations not only articulated gender and sexual anxieties, but also ordered the city’s diverse residents by marking their gender and sexual norms as different from an “American” population. These representations underscored not only how discussions of morality are often racialized, but also how operations of gender and sexuality evocatively clarify the ubiquity of white privilege.

Dragon Fruit Oral History Project

Asian Pacific Islander queer women and transgender activist history from the 1970s and 1980s is at risk of being lost. No archive actively collects their materials and queer elders in the community are approaching their seventies. Dragon Fruit Project trains members of APIQWTC (Asian Pacific Islander Queer Women and Transgender Community) to collect and record their own history, deposit collected materials and recorded oral histories at the GLBT Historical Society archive, and exhibit their activism at the GLBT History Museum in the Castro District of San Francisco as a significant first step in preserving their history.
