January 2011 - New Year, New Possibilities

Happy New Year! Well... "The Year We Make Contact" has passed and we are still working on a manned mission to Mars. I wonder what assumptions the next ambitiously titled film will make.

During the Fall 2010 semester, our students experimented with writing missions in City of Heroes. They also created some interesting new machinima. This time we created our movies using the Second Life platform. We plan to have these movies posted in the near future.

We did not have the opportunity to create any public events with our Second Life group, mentioned in the June 2010 update. The group was mostly used within the BECA class. We expect to retain the "Virtual Vision" name for our future projects, but further use of Second Life is unknown. More details on that later. For now, stay tuned to this page and our Thumdar forum.

The UOT made a minor name change at the end of 2010. It is now known as the "University of Terra". This change reflects the UOT's "virtual world agnostic" direction, while retaining the acronym so we can keep using the old business cards and letterhead. Hah! The old domains will forward to the new one so all your links should still work.

UOT still holds periodic open meetings in the free virtual world, Myst Online - Uru Live (MOUL). Check the UOT calendar and the UOT forum at Thumdar for meeting notices.

June 2010 - Second Life?

BECA is experimenting with some virtual land in Second Life for the Fall 2010 semester. At this time we have no long term plans for this location, but we hope to have something going there in the next few months.

This is a big transition period for us and we are taking the opportunity to play with a new name, "Virtual Vision". Our mission is the same, but the title change may allow more flexibility. It is easier to say and besides, we're suckers for alliteration! Feel free to join the "Virtual Vision" group in Second Life for updates this Fall. More to come...

UPDATE: The University of There (UOT) now has an official web site with forums and calendar. Loriendil is currently teaching her Creative Writing class and more courses will be coming. The UOT site is also Green Certified and running on solar power!

March 23, 2010 - UOT meetings in MOUL

The University of There (UOT) has started meeting in "MOUL" which is the recently re-opened Myst Online - Uru Live. MOUL is a 3D virtual world based on the Myst games and books. Currently, meetings are being held on Tuesdays at 7pm Pacific Time.

If you are interested in MOUL or joining the UOT discussions, read my post at Thumdar.com. I have a number of helpful tips and information links such as the Beginner Crash Course.

March 4, 2010 - There.com closing

Greetings fellow There Refugees! As most of you now know, There.com is closing at the end of the day, March 9th, 2010 (midnight). The 3D world will remain open until then but some services are not available. Read the full announcement here.

What this means:

Going forward, the SFSU Environmental Outpost and the University of There (UOT) will find a new home. Until then, Thumdar.com has graciously agreed to host Forum Groups for us and other clubs that were formed within the 3D world of There. You may contact ProfSami and Danzibar there via Private Messages. The Forums will be up shortly.

We encourage all There Refugees to register at Thumdar.com to connect with your friends and social groups. It is a free site with Forums and Private Message services. Regardless of where we all end up, it is a good place to preserve this wonderful community. Thumdar has been a host for quite some time and he recently stated that Thumdar.com will not shut down. Please be patient while Thumdar adapts his site to accommodate this sudden upheaval.

ProfSami and Danzibar would like to personally thank everyone who joined our group, participated in our events or simply visited the Outpost at UOT. It is our sincere hope that we can find a place to continue our mission of environmental communication, education and entertainment. Please bookmark this page and check back here for news as we approach Earth Day 2010.

Sincerely,

ProfSami, Danzibar and the students of BECA.

ProfSami ProfSami Danzibar Danzibar
