Dear Prospective Student,


Thank you for your interest in applying to the Post-Masters Pupil Personnel Services Credential (PPSC) Program in School Counseling. This program is designed to accommodate those individuals who currently hold a Master's Degree in Counseling and who wish to acquire a credential enabling them to work in California as a school counselor in a PK-12 school setting. Eligibility will only be determined once an application has been submitted. Transcript evaluations will not be conducted prior to the admissions process. (You can conduct your own informal evaluation by going to the Department of Counseling website under School Counseling and comparing your master’s courses with ours for potential equivalency.)


Individuals who are interested in applying to the PPSC program must submit an application to the Department of Counseling. Upon departmental review of your application and acceptance to the credential program, you will be invited for advising and orientation. Students begin the credential program as soon as their admissions process has been completed. The Department of Counseling only admits students for the fall semester of each year.


Your application must be submitted via email no later than January 15th to be considered for acceptance to the PPSC program. ALL PPSC APPLICANTS MUST ALSO APPLY TO THE UNIVERSITY BY JANUARY 15th (https://www2.calstate.edu/apply). Update: Please submit PPSC application via email first. After submission, the department will email you the instruction for next step.

  • On the application, please fill out Personal Information, Academic History (skip entering transcript manually, and Standardized Test part).

  • Please also skip Supporting Information and Program Materials parts. Students are notified by May 1st.

  • The selection process is highly competitive. Due to space limitations, we are only able to select a small number of students.


Please email the following documents to applymsc@sfsu.edu

  •      PPSC application (including Personal Statement)

  •     Resume (MS Word or PDF format)

  •      On a separate MS Word document, indicate:

    •      All post-baccalaureate schools attended

    •        Dates and names of all degrees conferred

    •        Grade point average for each school you attended

Please mail the following materials to the Department of Counseling:

  •     Nonrefundable fee of $25.00 for transcript evaluation and application processing.

  •     Official transcripts, including course descriptions from syllabi or college catalogue, from all graduate schools attended.

  •     Two letters of recommendation in sealed envelopes. Letters should be on official letterhead and signed.


Applications that do not include all of the above items will be considered incomplete and will not be reviewed.


The Department of Counseling is subject to confidentiality rules and regulations and is not permitted to share these data with any outside agency, person, or institution. For this reason, we ask that you retain copies of all application materials for your records.
