HISTORY OF THE MARTINI: AT LEAST THREE LEGENDS EXIST
MARTINEZ, CALIFORNIA AROUND 1870 A MINER FROM SAN FRANCISCO MADE IS WAY 40 MILES EAST TO JULIO RICHELIEU'S SALOON, PUT A NUGGET OF GOLD ON THE COUNTER AND ASKED FOR SOMETHING SPECIAL. RICHELIEU CONCOCTED THE FIRST MARTINI, WHICH WAS ORIGINALLY CALLED THE MARTINEZ BUT AS THE DRINK EVOLVED SO DID ITS NAME. YOU CAN TAKE THE FERRY TO VISIT THE PLAQUE, WHICH CELEBRATES THE MAKING OF THE FIRST MARTINI.
"PROFESSOR" JERRY THOMAS A BARTENDER AT THE OCCIDENTAL HOTEL ON MONTGOMERY STREET IN SAN FRANCISCO SERVED A TRAVELER HEADED EAST TO MARTINEZ, CALIFORNIA. THE TRAVELER ASKED FOR A SPECIAL DRINK AS HE PLACED A GOLD NUGGET ON THE COUNTER. THE "PROFESSOR" NAMED HIS CONCOCTION AFTER THE TRAVELER. THIS TOOK PLACE SOMETIME IN THE LATE NINETEENTH CENTURY.
1912 NEW YORK CITY BARTENDER, MARTINI DI ARMA DI TAGGIA, AT THE KNICKERBOCKER HOTEL FIXED THE FIRST DRY MARTINI FOR JOHN D. ROCKEFELLER AND NAMED THE MIX AFTER HIMSELF.

***THE ARE MANY OTHER TALES TO THE ORIGIN  OF THE MARTINI ALONG WITH  VARIATIONS TO THESE THREE STORIES I HAVE POSTED.

DOCUMENTATION OF EARLY BARTENDER RECIPE BOOKS ORIGINALLY CALLED THE MARTINI A MARTINEZ.  THE RECIPE FOR THE MARTINEZ CALLED FOR GIN VERMOUTH AND OTHER SWEET INGREDIENTS.  DURING THE EARLY 19OOs A MARTINI CONSISTED STRICTLY OF GIN AND AND A LOT OF VERMOUTH. BUT IN 1962 SEAN CONNERY, JAMES BOND IN THE MOVIE DR. NO, POPULARIZED THE VODKA MARTINI. MODERN DAY MARTINIS CALL FOR LESS VERMOUTH.  THE QUALITY OF GIN AND VODKA IS FINER THAN BEFORE MAKING VERMOUTH AN AFTER THOUGHT. THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO MAKE A MARTINI. THE PROPORTION OF GIN (OR VODKA) AND VERMOUTH DIFFER BY PREFERENCE AROUND THE UNITED STATES.  BASICALLY AS TIME PROGRESSED SO DID THE MARTINI. UNFORTUNATELY NOWADAYS "THE MARTINI HAS BE REDUCED TO A GLASS.  THESE KIDS WHO GREW UP ON WINE COOLERS WANT A RASBERRY CHOCOLATINI IN A MARTIN GLASS. THAT IS NOT A MARTINI, A MARTINI IS GIN OR VODKA WITH A SPLASH OF VERMOUTH. YOU SHOULDN'T GET THE GLASS IF YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE BOOZE"- GWENDOLYN OF FARALLON, SAN FRANCISCO BARTENDER , HEY GWEN I AGREE.
