INFORMATION FOR EDITORS

Spring 2008 Abbreviated Syllabus
Students of the History Department at SFSU produce a professional-quality academic journal, Ex Post Facto, once each year. Workshops provide student-editors with the skills needed to evaluate and select submissions; edit for style and content; work with authors on revisions; and line-edit final copy to the specifications delineated in the Chicago Manual of Style. During the Fall semester, the editorial staff selects essays for publication. During the Spring semester, the staff line edits the accepted submissions, so that we may produce a completed journal.

Students may take Editing and Publishing a History Journal for one, two, or three units of either undergraduate or graduate credit, (690/890) or they may participate without being formally enrolled in the class. The class is available for Credit/No Credit only. The only prerequisite for taking it for Credit at either level is History 300 or its equivalent. Students taking the course for one credit will be expected to edit two papers; students taking the course for two credits will be expected to edit four papers; and students taking the course for three credits will be expected to edit six papers.

All editors should have a copy of A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, 6th edition, by Kate L. Turabian. A copy of the complete Chicago Manual of Style is available in the History Department. Spelling follows Webster’s New College Dictionary, also available in the History Department office. Editors use a common evaluation form to evaluate papers.
